I never thought this would happen, but it has! These days, mainstream medicine has become very expensive, whether it's the cost of insurance, deductibles, copays, or doctor visits. More and more, people are addressing their health needs independently, or through non-traditional means. A growing trend is to use the internet to get health information and advice. Some physicians are now doing online "office visits", for non-urgent matters. A new trend in fitness and physical therapy is web-based exercise prescription. The way I am doing it is this: If I have seen a patient at least once for an examination, they may desire to do their rehab outside of the traditional physical therapy clinic. If so, I can build a rehab program for them, online, and they can do the exercises on their own, or with the help of a personal trainer. The web-based exercise menu shows the user how to do each exercise, and can be referred to as often as needed. Updates by the physical therapist will cost less than most people's copays, and they will not have to return to the physician or physcal therapist each time. This is an excellent option for people who want to do their own rehab, but may need just a little input from a physical therapist. |
